OK – I was wrong
26 May, 2008
OK, so I was wrong (it happens, occasionally). The Eurovision Song Contest got 7.1 million viewers on BBC1, not the 8m I predicted. Its down from previous years, perhaps a sign of things to come? I hope not. A Commons motion has already been tabled to force the Beeb to withdraw funding for future years, however they’ve already (on a Bank Holiday weekend!) defended it by saying the £175,000 for the night is good value and they’ll keep doing it whilst the audience keep watching. 7.1m is still a good Saturday night audience. Let’s also not forget the ‘value’ the BBC receive from the rest of their annual contribution in the EBU. Face it, the ESC is here to stay. Phew!
So tonight’s TV was dominated by the first semi-final of ITV’s ‘Britain’s got talent’ (surely it should be Britain HAS talent, right???). Good show, but is it just me, or is this format becoming a bit predictable and staid now? The jury is out on the stripping all the semis & final across the rest of this week. Surely ITV would get better ‘added value’ from dragging it out over a few months, like normal???
I’m quite a fan of the multi-channel spin-off show, so I was very pleased, if not surprised to see the positive cooporation of the ITV1 show crew for the beginning of the ITV2 show, ‘Britain’s got MORE talent’. Stephen Mulhern was good, as ever. I still don’t understand why ITV don’t make more of him elsewhere, now they don’t do Kids programmes anymore. Although he does shine on ITV2…
Bank holidays confuse my internal calender. I’m going to be completely mesed up this week, behind by a day, everyday. And being self-employed I’m always the last to know about the damn things – noone tells me and I don’t find out ’till I receive family instructions (OK, really they’re reminders) the day before… Everytime…
