Battle of Reality Talent

2 June, 2008

The local radio news was dominated by the finals of BBC1’s ‘I’d do anything’ and ITV1’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. As were the tabloids and GMTV. So it must be true. BGT won the real prize with 12m audience.

During the week I really went off BGT, but it improved for the final. The show looked visually spectacular, even with the shock result and unintended on-camera set change. I really didn’t predict the top three acts. My money was on Escala – the electric string quartet, Andrew Johnston – the 13yr old boy treble and Faryl Smith – the 12yr old booming contralto. But what do I know, it went to dancers George Sampson & Signature! I suspect Simon Cowell will sign them all and we’ll have 3 new top selling artists pretty soon!

I turned on the TV today and was greeted by the start of the freak show that is the Big Brother auditions on E4. Personally I prefer them to the main show, they’re quite revealing. Apparently we’re set for 16 housemates on Thursday and no doubt it will dominate the tabloid headlines, and therefore our national consciousness, for the next 13 weeks. Please.

The first series, back in 2000, was actually quite interesting. Practically a valid social experiment. And the second series wasn’t bad either. But it went downhill from there. I’m sorry, but it did. I understand that C4 can’t afford not to show it and that it in effect subsidies the ‘real’ C4, but THIRTEEN WEEKS!!!
